Google Business Profile Q&A Section: How to Use It for SEO

The Q&A section on Google Business Profile is one of the most overlooked features on the entire platform — most business owners have never touched it, even though it shows up directly on their listing and can be answered by anyone, including people with no connection to the business at all.

Why This Feature Matters More Than It Looks

Because Q&A is open to the public, unanswered or incorrectly answered questions sit visibly on your listing where every potential customer can see them. This is different from the proactive updates covered in our GBP Posts guide — Q&A is reactive and public, which makes leaving it unmonitored a real risk, not just a missed opportunity.

The Risk of Ignoring It

Anyone can post a question, and anyone — including someone with no actual knowledge of your business — can answer it. A competitor, a confused stranger, or an outdated assumption can end up as the visible “answer” to a real question a customer had, sitting on your profile indefinitely if you’re not checking regularly.

Step 1: Seed It With Your Own Common Questions

You’re allowed to post and answer your own questions, and this is the most effective way to use the section — don’t wait for the public to ask first. Post the three to five questions customers actually ask most often, using the same real, specific answers as the FAQ approach in our FAQ structuring guide: direct, specific, and genuinely useful.

Step 2: Check for New Questions Regularly

Enable notifications for your Google Business Profile if you haven’t already, and check the Q&A section on the same regular cadence you use for reviews — weekly is a reasonable baseline. A question sitting unanswered for weeks, or worse, answered incorrectly by someone else, is actively working against you the whole time it’s visible.

Step 3: Upvote Your Own Correct Answers

Questions with multiple answers display the most upvoted one first, not necessarily the most accurate one. If you post the correct, official answer, ask satisfied customers or use your own account structure appropriately to help it surface as the top response — an accurate answer buried below an outdated one still confuses visitors.

What Makes a Good Q&A Answer

Same standard as any other customer-facing content: direct, specific, and genuinely helpful. “Do you offer emergency service?” deserves “Yes, we offer 24/7 emergency service with typical response times under an hour” — not a vague “please contact us for details” that makes someone do extra work to get a real answer.

This Feeds Into Local SEO Too

Well-answered, specific Q&A content reinforces the same prominence and relevance signals covered in our Local SEO checklist — it’s another surface where Google reads engagement and accuracy as signs of a real, actively managed business.
